EG Newbury: Burnt Pine or Dark Oak? 808?

Edward Green fans, which color would be your recommendation for the Newbury wholecut: burnt pine or dark oak?

As a bonus question, how do you think the 808 last would look with the Newbury?

I visited their Jermyn St. shop a few weeks ago, but they didn't have the last, size, or colors in Newbury that I'm considering. After trying on several other models and lasts, the salesman and I concluded that the 808 in D-width would best fit my narrow feet with low arches. I wish they had had the Newbury in 808 D-width to 1) see how it looks in person and 2) see if my feet filled it well enough to avoid bagging/wrinkles. They didn't, so I'm gambling a bit with MTO.

By the way, I had previously decided to go for the Berluti Alessandro wholecut instead. But upon trying them on in Paris, the salesman steered me away from their three wholecut models, saying that my low arches would lead to excess fabric wrinkles. I appreciated his honesty. I love wholecuts, but the trouble is that they need to fit well to maintain their shape, and my feet are tough to fit. I wish I could try Scafora bespoke, but it's too hard to get to Naples multiple times.

Thanks for any advice.

The Newbury is probably my favorite EG shoe. I have it in mink suede (dark brown) without toe medallion on the 606 last and in burgundy, with medallion, on the 888. I think it might be even better on the 808, or possibly the 82. So to first answer your bonus question, I think the Newbury would be stunning on the 808. Of the colors you mentioned, the dark oak is the more formal, but my choice of the two would be burnt pine for its greater pizzazz quotient (in my opinion). In addition, I prefer it with the medallion. If you purchased it in burnt pine with medallion, you would have a more spectacular, noticeable shoe than, say, dark oak without medallion, the latter working better perhaps in a slightly more formal or subdued setting (although wholecuts are hardly formal).

The only place to be concerned about excessive creasing, of course, is on the vamp. If you found that there was too much space above your instep to properly fill the vamp area, a thin extra insole would probably bring your foot up to the necessary elevation to prevent creasing. I don't have an EG on the 808 so can't speak to its footbox height, but my impression has been that it was quite low in that area. If the latter is true, you will likely be just fine with that last.

I predict you'll love your Newburys!

I have Newbury in dark oak on the 808. I could post some pictures if that would be helpful.

I also have the RLPL Montford (Newbury w/ medallion) in burnt pine that I could post images of as well. Though, IIRC, this is on the 89.

I for one would love some pictures, as they say "... is worth more than a 1000 words". Also for comparison with my current project. a MTO SC seamless in the new last

aportnoy, as an owner, how do you like the Newbury on 808 relative to it on other lasts that you've seen? Would you vote for burnt pine or dark oak?

I think Burnt Pine would be even nicer.

I agree. I have Newbury in dark oak, mink suede, burnt pine and burgundy. Burnt pine is my favorite of the lot.

Burnt pine.

A wholecut, more than any other design (ex. plain toe blucher, plain toe chukka, plain toe monk), showcases the leather. A med brown color like burnt pine would allow enough contrast to be visible without being so light it becomes hard to pair.

Dark oak is inherently not as interesting, and antiquing is less striking with it. A wholecut is not a formal style anyway.

as the owner of 3 dark oak pairs of EG, I say Burnt Pine. My next pair will be BurntPine. I think Burnt Pine might be more versatile, if less conservative. Dark Oak is very very nice, but doesn't have that wow factor of Burnt Pine. Of course it depends on the shoe and I think that Burnt Pine will be the better choice here.

A medium brown shoe will Pop, while tan will scream, and dark brown just sort of whispers.
