Dress/Athletic Socks for Chelsea Boots?

Just wondering what the general consensus was for what is the most appropriate type of sock to wear with chelsea boots? I've always worn ankle athletic socks with my boots for the shock and sweat absorption but I just got a pair of dressier boots and was thinking of dress socks would be more appropriate as I would always wear dress socks with dress shoes. The boots are versatile enough to wear with jeans as well.

Should socks be shown with chelsea boots? Would it be okay to wear ankle athletic socks with the chelsea boot as long as the sock doesn't show? Would the type of sock I wear be based on the pants that I wear (jeans = athletic socks; trousers = dress socks)? Most of the internet sources I've seen are basing socks to wear with boots with cowboy boots, hiking boots but not dress boots.

Dress socks should be worn with dress shoes. Ankle socks would look weird with a chelsea boot if you sat.

While you're purchasing new socks, do yourself a favor and get over-the-calf dress socks so you don't show leg either.

They were on sale at Neiman Marcus online. Had to grab them before someone else did. Never seen them on sale before so I took the bait and got em'

For JL Tudors - as with my EG Newmarkets - I'd always go dress socks. That being said, I do have a pair of inexpensive Alfred Sargent burgundy Chelseas in an inferior leather that I wear in the rain and I do sometimes wear white athletic socks with those.

Nice shoes, especially on discount. I'd wear dress socks with them.

The discount was only 33% which is a joke compared to sales compared to SF and sales I've seen in the past. I believe there is a JL Factory in London and possibly the boots are even cheaper there. But it'll be off-set by buying a plane ticket, hotel room, food, and strippers

A third off on JL is significant, and rare. Good deal.

For firsts of the prestige line in a color, style and size you are looking for, 33% is not bad. The factory store is hit or miss, and sitting around waiting for one to be available before someone else gets to it first is something worth paying a little more to avoid. But never wear white athletic socks with dress shoes. If you have to wear thick cotton athletic shoes, at least make sure they are black or navy.
