Do Tailors usually keep the fabric when drastically taking in the waist & chest of a suit coat?

I want to buy a lightly used Hickey Freeman Madison that was taken in so much that it now fits one size down(42 to 40). An unaltered Madison is usually 22-22.5" in the chest and ~21" in the waist. I normally wear coats with more suppression. For example, my RLBL is 21.5" in the chest and 20" in the waist, fitting with no wrinkles in the front or tightness in the back. My 1818 Regent also fits quite well, with a 22" chest(never felt a need to get it taken in - not worth the $) and a 20.25" waist.

My question is, would a tailor that works out of her house(according to the seller) have cut the excess fabric? It was taken in quite a bit when the seller's son requested the alterations. The Chest is 20.5" and the the waist is 19.25". He used the AAAC method like I do. It's definitely tagged as a 42. Would it be possible to let out and look great on me? It'll cost very little to buy the suit.

No one would know this except the person who did the work or someone who can look under the lining at the seams to know what was done.

Hi Despos,
Holy cow, thanks for responding - ive always appreciated reading your posts and learned a great deal from them. In roughly 5 years I'll be in need of your services :] Hopefully in Texas.

Do you think it's worth eating the potential return shipping costs just to find out? 4" in both seems like a great deal, but you'd know better than me.

Despos can better answer but:

It is second hand
Already much altered

Does not seem a worthwhile option.

Do you want to set up an appointment now? I have a pretty big back log.

The chest needs to measure 3" bigger than it is at present. 20.5" to 22". That's a lot. She may have butchered the jacket taking it in that much, who knows what you will find and what is possible. Don't know how to advise you because there isn't the information needed to know what can be done.

I'd be fine with 2.5" but I understand your point. Thanks, Chris.

Seriously? Cool. I will be making significantly more cashflow in the next several years and my wife is fine with an annual $20,000 suit budget(well, overall tailored clothing budget). So you'd book me in 5 years down the road?

This may seem a bit silly but I was always afraid of going to certain parts of Chicago, based on my dad's experiences living there.

It's prudent that you're choosing to meet Despos at his Dallas location (5 years from now). His shop in Chicago is in a really rough neighbourhood, and I imagine it'll be like Mogadishu come 2019.
