I'm a huge fan of bibs. I used to wear just shorts but after getting my first pair of bibs I don't think I'll ever buy just shorts again. The bibs just feel a lot better IMO. My favorite pair are some Descente bibs I got about a year ago. I just got a new pair of Trek bibs free from the Trek rep (I work at a bike shop) so I'm excited to give those a try.

As for tops there are plenty of decent but affordable jerseys out there. You don't need to spend nearly as much on a jersey as you do for shorts IMO.

Get some good cycling shoes and pedals. I prefer Sidi shoes with the ratchet adjustments and Look pedals.

Nope. I did 50 miles out to and around Rockaway beach in my jeans yesterday. I'm sure I've done over 1000 miles on my APCs and they're way comfortable and still without a hole.

I'm not much of a gear guy, though, I guess - I ride in what I wear normally because I ride to commute/as general transportation as well as doing distance. I agree that the most important thing is to get out and ride - get the gear once you're doing serious miles if you feel like you need it then.

I'm 6'3" and wear bibs exclusively. I second a prior posters advice on going to your local shop and getting their advice.

+1 I'd take more comfortable shorts over a comfortable jersey any day, especially when you are in the saddle for long periods of time.

Definately bibs all the way. I also recommend going full zip on the jersey. It seems to me that Giordana and Castelli offer the best mix of features, quality and price. Pearl Izumi is not bad either.

I like Pearl Izumi's high-end stuff; I use MicroSensor shorts, I find them comfortable when riding centuries. You should also look into a new seat; most of the wooden blocks that come standard on bikes are horrible.

Has anyone ever ridden with only their bib on sans jersey?

I'm 6'2", and I prefer bibs over shorts. I mostly wore Voler.

Get a couple of pairs of bibs, and a few jerseys. And for the love of God, short socks.

agree to disagree. most decent bibs are good enough for a starting cyclist with the biggest problem being fit over chamois density. the joy of spending some fun money on a nice jersey is that unlike the shorts it will last for a number of seasons because it won't wear out.

I liked Pearl Izumi until I tried Giordana. I realize the Pearl Izumi chamois doesn't meet the saddle and my seat bones properly and the Gioridana has become my go-to bib.

Either way .. for the OP ... bibs and full zip jersey (if you live in warm weather)

There is a local crit racer around here who always races in knee high athletic socks.....he also goes by the nickname "Socks" because of it.
