I think oxfords are only for suits. You can wear slightly more casual shoes with a suit, such as derbies or sometimes even tassel loafers, but oxfords with jeans is a very bad look.
If you're interested in classic style, look through the eras of when classic style was defined, which was mostly the 1930s through '60s. Starting in the 70s, tailored clothing started to go into decline, reviving for a bit in the 80s, and then declining again in the 90s. But look at elegantly dressed men from the supposed "Golden Age." Oxfords are worn with suits, but rarely with anything more casual, not even a sport coat, nevermind jeans.
