just curious, what do most people use now if you don't know who's going to be reviewing your letter?

According to some website, its either "To whom it nmay concern" or try to get the actual hiring managers name.

all those I-bankers laughing at this forwarded cover letter should stop and reflect on why other people think they have to act like utter jackasses to impress them.

The funny thing is they care so much about the typos and the bench pressing, but I mean that kid is triple majoring, math, econ and computer science, with a 3.93 gpa while having 2 part time jobs. Assuming it's true, and you can just get a transcript to verify, he's actually extremely smart and he is hard working. He has all the skills needed for an analyst role. I'd take that any day over some douchebag who talks about how they are the president of their fraternity for their cover letter.

meh hypothetically I'd give that person an interview..

Not hypothetically, as someone that has been hiring for years and years, the letter would get tossed in the garbage half read.

Cover letters need to be short and grab me to convince me to read the resume. That guy had me snoring.

I am completely agreed with what you said.

He had me smiling! Obviously, he tried very hard to impress his potential employer and that was why I had to keep reading and see if he would say that he could fly.
