Just to close the loop, it had been awhile now and I have worn my Tom Ford suit to work many times without any negative commentary. I have actually received quite a few compliments from folks, including on the fit. After the experience, I tend to agree with the folks that say it is all about the fit and the color and as long as you wear it with confidence, you can pull it off.
I will say that my Tom Ford experience has been mixed. I was always a previous fan of the soft shoulder, Isaia, style suits, but since wearing the Tom Ford and another RLBL, there is something more striking about the more structured shoulder. That said, I find it to be less comfortable and less "wearable" than the more relaxed style.
I guess that means I will just have to go back and forth in my closet...
