If you are looking for something newer, 36 Quai des Orfèvres is pretty good.

And +1 for Le Samourai. One of my favourite films ever.

I think we recently had a similar thread. I can't really recommend stuff because I dunno what is available in english which is too bad because I've probably watched more french crime film than anyone on this board...

A good recent one that was a hit at Cannes so should be available in english soon:
Un prophète/A prophet: it's a great prison film.

France had some great crime movies pre-Melville as well. I'd recommend Le Trou and ...Grisbi by Jacques Becker.

A great recent double-hander is Mesrine, based on the real rife criminal Jacques Merine (sic). Played to wonderful effect by Ms Bellucci's other half.
Worth checking out.
The first part is Public Enemy No1, second part is Instinct for Death, not v.v.
