So, in true iGent style, I started a thread, got lots of great advice, and ignored it all.

I decided that what I really need is a brown captoe bal, so I went with these:

Made in Romania by world-famous shoemaker J. Crew. At $158, I am very pleased with these shoes. The construction seems okay and they are very comfortable.

They look nice, do they have rubber soles or leather?

Those look nice. I have it in my head that it's relatively OK to cheap out on suede shoes, because there's not that much difference between cheap suede and expensive suede (at least compared to cheap vs. expensive smooth leather). Is this reasonable or just a lie I tell myself?

No, I agree.

Although really nice suede is noticeably better, anything below ~$600 is very similar.

Bleachboy,

Been following this thread with interest, as I'm looking for some brown suede casual shoes that I wouldn't be afraid to beat up a bit - had my eye on those exact shoes and was curious about the quality. Please post a review after you've worn them for a while!

Cheers,
Hal

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
