Went with this one-of-a-kind offering from Frank Clegg. Zip top briefcase with a double gusset in black 'gloss' belting leather (Very similar to the stock black just with a bit more shine perhaps) with bone stitching that contrasts in a subtle but noticeable way that I love. Very happy with it!

Thanks! Yeah I did not anticipate getting a new briefcase but I always get a kick out of the one-of-a-kind offerings they offer a few times a year and checked them out. Something about it being more or less their most bog-standard briefcase but with just the slight detail of the stitching throughout the whole bag and a bit more sheen to the leather really caught my eye. Best of both worlds. The white is probably a bit less 'loud' in real life than in photos, as well.

I also had previously had a black goatskin commuter from Clegg and it was great but the lack of structure was frustrating whereas this one stands on its own and has the nice big divider that makes using it a bit easier IMO. Plus it's a lot more interesting to look at than the commuter, if a bit more formal.

I’m looking at Frank Clegg for my first briefcase.

I’m currently using an unstructured 4” commuter bag from a different brand my father let me borrow— it’s very practical but a bit bulky; I’m hoping a 2.5” depth “laptop” bag will look sleeker, but I am worried it may be too thin long-term.

I carry a laptop and lunch in a square glass Pyrex dish. (Although, I’ve noticed with the 4” depth bag I can also carry a mini umbrella and many more things in it).

Should I go for 4” width or is the laptop bag at 2.5” enough?
Does anyone have experience with a 2.5” depth “laptop” bag and carrying their lunch in it? Thank you

I think you'd really have to just find a comparable bag in person you can check out, but I think the lighter and thinner you can make away with the better. Both the commuter and the zip top I now have are 4" but the structure-less nature of the commuter made it more frustrating to use, though the one large compartment was nice.

I have the computer bag and generally carry in it: (1) 0.5” wide notebook,(2) laptop and (3) mouse, charger, headphones. These three bits all sits next to each other basically. Umbrella goes on top of that. Whether your dish fits depends on its size but probably should be ok. The bag is fairly flexible. I’d give the guys at Frank clegg a call. They’re great. (Also as an fyi: I had them make me the big without the shoulder strap hardware without any additional cost as I preferred the cleaner look without)

Is anyone able to share their experience with Basäder? How are their products in comparison to Frank Clegg? Who else would be considered a competitor to Basäder in terms of price, quality, value, and customer service/experience?

I've had a Basader made a few years ago - their briefcase are amazing value for the price and have really eye catching designs. At that price I don't think they have any comparable competition. The only thing to keep in mind is that they use full grain leather which is quite heavy and stiff.

Can anyone recommend a brand or MTO/bespoke maker similar in quality and aesthetic to Chester Mox, but without a year long wait? I would love a customized Newport briefcase and am willing to pay between 2-5k for the right bag. I want something a bit more fashion forward than Clegg's designs but that is able to be customized for functionality, especially with things like a bottom-zippered newspaper pocket on the back to accommodate passing through luggage handles, etc. I used to have a glaser designs and it was great, but it was stolen and they are now out of business.
