I just purchased 2 Borrelli shirts on sale and need to get the sleeves shortened. My question is that because the shoulders are hand sewn and have that nice roll under fabric at the seam, do i have them shortened from the shoulder or from the cuff? Reason being that i dont want to screw up the nicely done shoulders. On the other hand if i shorten them from the cuff then i will lose most of the sleeve placket opening. I need them shortend about 2-3 inches. Thanks alot.

Well, you're going to 'lose' out on the original details either way then. But I believe when they're shortened from the cuff, they'll dismantle the placket etc and make you a new one (as the saying goes). I think a competent shirt maker/tailor will be able to handle the job well.

When shirt sleeves are shortened, the placket is completely removed and reattached as not to loose the integrity of the placket. Sometimes, if the sleeve is only being shortened a tad, the placket is not removed. Also, the tailor will taper the sleeve to maintain the proper proportion.

Make sure you tell them you want the placket removed. I had a couple shirts altered (before I knew to tell them about the placket) and they did not remove the placket first so the sleeves look kindof ridiculous.

I have altered several Borrelli shirts this way and they turned out great. Just find a good tailor.

less than 1" just raise the cuff.
more than that the placket must be raised.
