hi there

I'm attending a black tie event but already told the host I don't own a tuxedo and don't find it practical to buy one for this one event. I'm wearing a navy blue suit & classic white shirt. What color bow tie & vest would you recommend to still complete a good look?

Thanks!

You'll have better help here:

If the event is black tie don't wear a bow tie with a suit. Navy suit, white shirt, navy tie, black shoes, well polished. No vest. That's assuming the black tie dress code isn't strictly enforced.

Second everything above. Navy suit with a navy or black tie (not a bowtie), black cap-toe oxfords, white shirt. Nowadays very few folks will have any issue with that - especially if you're not a part of the wedding party.

Yeah. A bow-tie would make a perfectly nice suit, in that setting, look like a poor, 'cheat' imitation of a tux. Just wear a conservative, dark necktie. A brilliant white shirt and dark suit (how dark IS that navy?) go a decent way towards signalling formality.

Or regretfully decline the invitation.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
