Does this make ****** look big? Just kidding.

Ok so this is pretty hard to put out there but I'm hoping for some honest and reasonably mature advice. I'm about 5.6 feet with a 29-30 waist and was about 125-130 lbs but recently I've gained about 10 lbs and it looks like most of it's gone to my waist and butt. Maybe I always had these proportions so I don't know if the weight has just added to something I've always had. Maybe it's bad posture?

I'm pretty self-conscious about it and constantly feel like people will notice it. in some cases I have trouble finding slimmer jeans because they ride up, or my shirts sort of 'sit' on my behind...

My questions:
1. Am I over-reacting here and this isn't something anyone besides me notices?

there are lots of confident overweight people.
2. if I should be worried, what do you suggest I do about it? is it about selective clothes or working out with an emphasis on that area, etc.

Thanks

First off dude, no one here is gonna check out your ass (well maybe a few SFers might).

According to my girlfriend's beauty mags, women like it when a guy has round, muscular butt. Supposedly it is one of the first thing they notice when they meet a guy. As long as it is not feminine looking, I wouldn't sweat it.

Also, maybe wearing shorter shirts or tucking in will eliminate the shelving problem?

You got a big butt. Welcome to the club. You can tuck your shirt in or you can wear bigger shirts or you can find a shirt that stops above your butt. I would go with the tuck or with a shirt that has a ribbed bottom that will end above your butt. As far as finding slim jeans you are going to have to look long and hard to find something that works.

You can reshape your behind. It takes work, but it can be done. Do one hundred scissor kicks on each side, five times a day for a month. If you survive those thirty days, you will see a marked difference in your backside silhouette. Your hind quarters will look more athletic. Trousers will fit and flatter in a different way. Keep up the process, at a lesser pace for the rest of your life.
Your thighs will tone up, too.

Other than exercise and diet, there are clothing tricks. You can wear shirts that hit halfway down your behind, but stripes and ribbed waistbands will draw extra attention to the area. Color coordination that brings attention to your face and minimizes the lower half also helps.

I too suffer similar problems.

Other than the obvious running and stairs climbing, what other exercises is a good way to target your glutes?

Squats, deadlifts, lunges, deep leg presses....

Of ocurse, these exercises will target your glutes which will develop them further, leading to a more muscular (bigger) butt.

Another way to minimize a "big backside" is to add muscle to the upper torso.

Bingo. Your posture isn't the greatest and you really could stand to work out your upper body. Broaden yourself out and all will be fine.

Some guys gain weight like a girl (hips, butt) but it looks like you also gain it in the normal spare tire area (belly). Losing a few pounds should reduce both areas.

If you're that uptight about it, you can try wearing spandex shorts which are a size or two too small, but that's not comfortable all day long. Some boxer briefs with a high lycra/spandex content may help, but better to look for athletic wear (like a girdle for guys).
