My father is trying to lose weight. I want to buy him a reliable weight scale. I don't know where to start. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I use a Tanita. They make many models. I have been happy with mine so far but have not compared its accuracy against a different scale.

Is he technically challenged at all? Lots of scales these days have too many functions like body fat and BMI calculators and all that jazz. He probably doesn't need that stuff.

Look for something with big numbers if his eyes aren't what they used to be.

I use the gym's scale, but if I had to buy one of my own I'd probably just go to WalMart or Target.

Tanitas are pretty good, just make sure it's not one with a million functions on it. Their level of accuracy should be fine for his needs.

If you're going by a scale to determine weight loss, make sure he weighs himself at the same time and approximate hydration every day to improve reliability.

He is technically inept. The Tanita looks pretty good. I guess I'll tell him to weigh himself morning before work. I've had scales in the past and the problem is usually my feet don't fit on the platform. I'm only a 11 and he's about the same.

Use the mirror. Body weight doesn't always give an accurate representation of what's going on and people get caught up in the numbers as opposed to the results. Same weight with a different composition isn't reflected on a scale and some get frustrated by that

My sister brought home three different scales from Target and Walmart. Each one measured different, with an overall error range spanning 7 pounds!

Get a mechanical scale with the largest platform you see. Make sure your dad is consistent on where and how he weights his feet on the scale. Use it as a method of determing weight loss/gain over time, but not an exact to-the-pound precision instrument.
