I gave my Northumbria a light wash in lukearm water and with some baby detergent, as the smell was not bearable. My clothes started smelling, after wearing it that one time for 20 minutes. I also sank half a bottle of Febreze into the inside, now the smell is less annoying, but still there.

I think the previous owner must have overdone it with re-waxing, as there is also a significant wax smell. Some outer parts are waxed so intensively that you can basicall have the jacket stand on its own, when bringing it inside.

However, I am still intrigued by it, very comfy, sturdy and practical with all its pockets. I guess this is my autumn project now....

If it's really that bad take a hair dryer to it and strip off as much excess wax off with a sponge or cloth. The last owner might of used a wax that is less refined then barbours wax.

I have handwashed a bedale totally submerged in a tub with detergent, inside ironed (cotton lined) and re waxed to near new with minimal shrinkage.

finally the pics, jacket is now 95% dry.

i was mistaken reg the wax. It is not that bad, it seems the cloth was wet from the inside and therefore smelled stronger, but has now dried up.
Next i need to figure out how to get rid of the wrinkles. I guess brushing or mild waxing will do the trick.

Looks very good on you, size is spot on imo. Definitely needs a waxing which will make the lines/creasing disappear.

thank you.

btw, have you heard anything of this wax brand? It was recommended when I searched for the Barbour wax: https://amzn.eu/d/7KhIfRb

I dont see way not, never heard of it but it's very yellow though, so I wonder if it's beeswax based and if so might be harder to apply as beeswax has higher melting point. I don't know why barbours own wax is so difficult to get hold off, I ended up going into an outlet store to pick one up at ridiculous price.

Luckily a tin will last ages for me. You can also get crafty and make your own wax with mineral oil and paraffin which is what barbour uses I believe but I give that one a miss. Next time I will order from barbour themselves.

I just received another Barbour from Ebay, the Border.

There is indeed a big difference to the newer Barbours. The Border must be made from thornproof cloth. It doesn´t have the Barbour logo on the left outer pocket, so it must be at last 15 years old. I quite like the sturdy feeling of the heavier cloth. It is similar to the Northumbria I got a few weeks ago, but the Northumbria´s cloth is still much heavier. A very nice purchase for 120 bucks.

I have a Beaufort from 2021, which is very very light. It feels almost like pure cotton and is not heavy. I wonder how the cloth turns out, when I put some wax on it.
