Asterix vs. Tin Tin

Prompted by Mr Herbert's question here Also see http://www.styleforum.net/showthread.php?t=39692 from the last time the subject came up (I only got a few - and aren't most of the names different between the French and English versions anyway?) I really enjoyed both of them as a kid. My parents had a bunch books from both series, about half of which were in French, so I didn't get the subtleties from those since I was basically just looking at the pictures in those ones...

Asterix! I love those comics. I prefer them over Tin Tin. The new Asterix live action movies with Gerard Depardieu & Christian Clavier are pretty funny as well. Mission Cleopatre is also with Monica Belluci btw...

Asterix, because the puns and language are fantastic - goscinny and uderzo are comical

Tintin's only redeeming features are Captain Haddock and Jolyon Wagg; and even then, Asterix probably has the better supporting cast

yeh Asterix, the puns are great. dont know if they are direct translations from the french version, but the names like unhygenix, cacophonix etc still amuse me

But even with all the comedy of Asterix, the portrayal of the Roman society is pretty accurate. Also, there are lots and lots of cameos of famous people in the asterix novels which are funny to see. Even if some of them are pretty outdated by now.

yeah, really great stuff i also like how it's vaguely historical, and they have all the major intersections of historical figures - cleopatra, marc antony, the visigoths, the vikings, the britons, the new worlders... simply fantastic edit -

I liked Tintin as a child, but loved Asterix. I used to have the whole collection (as it was at that time) and read and re-read them until all the books were dog-eared.

I haven't read the original French versions, but I do remember reading that Bell and Hockridge did a brilliant job translating the books into English. Apparently, quite a few people who read both the French and English versions preferred the English because of the great translations, including the puns and names.

A good translation is extremely important, in Dutch the old translations were much better. The editors revised the names and some of the jokes to be more 'of this time' with the result that the comics are less funny

Tintin, for the fantastic attention to detail and research Herge goes through. Just the attention to cars is fascinating. Who can forget the Lancia Aurelio in the Calculus affair?

Asterix probably receives more love from foreigners than Tintin because the translations are great. I for one would choose Tintin over Asterix any day.

Do you really write the name Tin Tin en English? Weird.
