Been on a search for a grey/charcoal winter coat and am having no luck. I want it to be wool, above the knees and fairly simple. I like both of the coats below a lot but neither have slant pockets for your hands (am I the only person in the world who wants to keep their hands warm while wearing a coat?). Anyone have similar suggestions? Preferably under $700.

I think most top coats are not going to have slanted pockets for you to put your hands in. I usually wear gloves with mine. You might be better of with a car or pea coat.

What's the general consensus on wearing orphaned suit pants? I was browsing through a couple Marshall's/Ross/Thrift stores looking for a solid grey, or light patterned wool pants but couldn't pull the trigger on anything thinking about the fact that they could be orphaned suit pants.

I think the styleforum groupthink is that orphaned suit pants are not OK especially the striped variety. I agree with Claghorn though, if you can't tell, then it doesn't really matter.

Orphaned suit pants are generally fine.

Orphaned suit jackets not so much.

Orphaned suit pants in solid grays are passable. A lot of SF posters will say no to navy ones but personally I think those are passable as well.

No pinstripes, in my opinion.

New to SF, have a question. For brick-and-mortar stores in NYC, as far as sportcoats in the $200-400 range and suits in the $600-800 range, what are some SF recommendations for both the stores themselves and brands? Thank you.

You can probably get both from Brooks Brothers on sale.

Other than fabric, please list the features of a pair of typical orphan suit trousers which differentiate them from ordinary trousers. Let's use a BB 1818 suit as a starting point since most would agree that is a typical suit. Don't list outlier features like uncommon waistbands, lack of belt loops, etc.

Can you all recommend an excellent quality navy cashmere cable crew sweater. I am interested in picking up this closet stable for the fall and upcoming winter. I am will to spend up to $400 as long as it is excellent quality (will not stretch, good quality cashmere) and will last me for years to come.

Thanks in advance for the recommendations.

Price range, location (currently), and time frame?

Also, a good starting point:
http://www.styleforum.net/t/317672/list-of-bare-necessities

seems like i could do ok for say $150 per item (pant, shirt) and shoes and jacket more? doubt i'd have much more use for a thin blazer and "summery" shoes much as i live in the midwest. the wedding's in february so i figured i'd give myself a little time in case i need to order something that takes a while to process.

You've pretty much answered your own question. The fabric and pattern of suit trousers will often be different from standard trousers.
