I was thinking something like this pictured below (sans the tie) along with some navy or stone pants, and walnut strands. Although I wear that color a lot, so it really isn't trying anything new unfortunately.

They certainly can. But without seeing the pants and shoes in question, it's difficult to say whether they do in any particular case.

What are good shoes to go with light shorts, like chinos?

Sperry Top-Siders (or comparable boat shoes) or various types of preferably non-high top canvas sneakers would be the classic choices.

The precise color of the footwear would be of relatively minor importance with light chino shorts, although various popular shades of tan and brown boat shoes are almost always safe choices. Many other color choices can be acceptable, however. Use your own good judgement, and if you're in some doubt as to a given combination, avoid it. (Unless, of course, you like edgy and/or unconventional combinations.) Since if you're not quite sure whether a combination works, it's likely that at least some of the people who see you will have their doubts about what you're wearing, too.

A handful of rare exceptions aside, shorts are an inherently informal item of clothing, best worn in informal settings, and typically with other casual clothing items. Consequently, the "does this go with that" standards tend to be fairly relaxed. Indeed, too much attention to detail should actually be avoided - you usually don't want to be that guy whose chino shorts are perfectly pressed and starched, and whose Top-Siders look brand new. (In almost any situation where that much attention to detail is appropriate, you'd be better off wearing long pants.)

I would recommend this only if you are rather slim in the seat. IF not, you will have to size up. Epaulet tapered rudy may be something you should check out if slim pants are too tight in the thighs/seat. I have this problem despite having a natural 32 waist.

I don't think I would go with stone pants. I think it might look too washed out.

I have a merino wool crew-neck sweater that is a little too baggy around the midsection. I'm thinking about trying to shrink it by soaking it in hot water and laying it out to dry.

Should I throw it in the dryer? Use cold water instead of hot? Thoughts?
