I recently purchased the J Press York Street "Classic Top Coat" from the winter clearance sale. I am happy with it overall, but the one thing that is bothering me is that the button placement seems too low, but I don't really know much in this topic and could use your help. I've always seen topcoats with the 3 or 4 buttons starting at a higher stance, with the top button hitting somewhere on the lower chest. But this particular coat's buttons start just above my navel and end well at my groin (to confirm, there are only three buttons).

I stand about 6'1" and this is a size Medium -York Street sizing, so it should be more "fashion forward". Which is why I was surprised that this three quarter length coat itself hits lower than I expected, just at my knee, which is certainly a proper length but not as short-tailed as what you would see in GQ these days. So perhaps that is why the buttons are lower as well...(?)

So does the button placement seem odd or is it passable? Seems weird to me to have the third button way below the belt. Wearing a 3/2 sport coat or suit underneath, the top jacket button would be seen when the coat is buttoned. Is that okay in the SF Sartorial Encyclopedia?

Thank you in advance. I can always return it for a gift card if need be.

It looks fine. The problem is, in very cold weather, comfort would be reduced unless that opening were plugged with a scarf.
