Advice on sport coat fit - 38R vs 40R

Hello! Just looking for advice which one is the correct fit. The 38R looks better on than me than 40R, but feels a bit tight across my back based on what I see. The 40R looks a bit boxy, but not sure if it just needs to be tailored a bit. I am not sure if the shoulder is a bit wide on the 40R. The jacket is unstructured and I am not sure if the divet I see if because of the jacket being too wide at the shoulder. I don't know how tight is too tight or how roomy is too roomy.

The first 4 pics are the 38R and the next 4 are the 40R. Would love to get your feedback!

The 40R is a bit better, but will still need alterations for an optimal fit.

That particular brand is boxy. Yes, 40 with alterations. That won’t fix the boxi-ness, though.
