CA state income taxes are very high. The total tax burden is one of the highest in the nation, always in the top ten. People like to blame Prop 13 for everything, but the bottom line is that taxes are high per dollar earned because income and sales taxes are very high. The blame for our "bankruptcy" lies squarely on spending, and nobody has been able to torture Prop. 13 numbers to show that it is responsible for bad schools, bad finance etc, no matter how hard they have tried.

It's "ugly as sin" under the assumption that if each of us had $100 million dollars to build a house we would design it differently. That's a pretty far stretch to call it "ugly as sin" when you consider the property.
