I've actually been pretty lucky with good employees that last seven years or so. Before that there were a couple lazy manipulative clinkers, but they quit. One sensitive woman did crumble under a lack of praise - - -

Employees need to feel valued. Once you make an employee proud of their work, half your battle is won.

I've never cared about any of my colleagues' personalities as long as they were all business, not too fucked up in the head, and brought results that I could claim as my own.

As for that guy OP mentioned, not too important as far as my opinion is concerned. He brings the results, which reflects the bottom-line for YOUR performance, he can be catty as long as it doesn't influence the results from the whole team.

She was not a good employee and needed to go. The one I have now is really good and I really do try to be supportive.
