Baseball legend, Don Zimmer, dead at age 83. A baseball lifer who could trace his roots to the old Brooklyn Dodgers. Every team Don Zimmer played for, coached and managed is claiming him as one of their own. No better tribute. The 1989 division winning Chicago Cubs were called the “Boys of Zimmer”. Jim Leyland called him his “best friend”. God be good to Don!

RIP Bob Welch (only 57).

As a young Dodgers' fan it was so awesome seeing him throw heat past Reggie Jackson in the '78 World Series.

Not sure if stats would bear me out, but at least in my memory, in the ensuing years as a Dodger starter he rivaled Nolan Ryan for the consistently worst f'ing luck and run support for starting pitchers. Welch would post an ERA under 3, good strikeout and WHIP numbers, and finish the season 11-9 . . . *taking a quick look at actual starts I'm probably extrapolating a bit from my memories of 1986*

I was living in and about Oakland in the late 80's and early 90's and following the A's. Welch had some really good years there. But it was sad watching him almost always go to complete **** in big playoff games. I can't remember if I heard this or just surmised it, but he seemed to have some sort of mild anxiety disorder that would undermine him in those situations. It was like watching the Little League World Series and seeing some kid get totally overwhelmed by the moment and unraveling.

I also forgot he won 27 freaking games for the A's one year.
