The official thrift/discount store bragging thread

About a month and a half ago, I was killing some time in a DVD/game rental store in the outskirts of Tokyo when I noticed they had an adjoining vintage clothing shop. Spotted a leather jacket that at first I thought must have been synthetic leather since it was priced so low. Y2900 or $36.50...

General advice for what to wear when appearing on TV/video

Thanks for all the great advice! Not sure why but I was asked to wear a white dress shirt. Will ask if a light blue shirt is okay. Otherwise a dark navy suit with a subtle window-check. Haven't figured out which tie to go with but leaning toward a dark-ish blue one with low-key patterns. Or...

General advice for what to wear when appearing on TV/video

I'm going in for a video session and they've only given me very vague information at best to wear "business clothes". When pressed, they added a preference for a "white dress shirt". For anyone who has worked in film or TV, do you have any more specific advice? I'm already leaning toward a...

National Geographic's new documentary on Japanese organized crime: "Crime Lords Of Tokyo"

Apparently it was released a week ago. Some pretty good scenes including a real deal Godfather (oyabun). :nodding:

Recommendations on travelling (super) light for one week trip in Asia (Seoul, ROK)

I guess I'm going to get them done stateside. Resole America works okay for me but it was much less hassle with an APO address... A friend lives in Azabu Juban and indicated Spica did a great job on his shoes. And, the second one, Union Works, is a top-end joint that has been in business for...

Recommendations on travelling (super) light for one week trip in Asia (Seoul, ROK)

The quality in Tokyo might be great but the prices are unreal: :cloud: http://www.spica-inc.jp/service_price_e.html :cloud: http://www.union-works.co.jp/repair/usboots/ If I could get the equivalent "expertise" of the local MISTER MINIT here in Japan but at a fraction of the price, I'd...

Recommendations on travelling (super) light for one week trip in Asia (Seoul, ROK)

xericx and impolyt_one - many many thanks for your advice and tips! The leather daypack I'll be toting along has a bit less functionality than the GO RUCK pack (which looks sweet by the way) and a bit on the fashionable side. It has an internal frame as well: And, the boots I'll be bring...

Recommendations on travelling (super) light for one week trip in Asia (Seoul, ROK)

I'm planning a short (just shy of) one-week trip in South Korea. It's almost all personal so no need for suits, laptops and other gear. This time, I want to travel super light. No check-in luggage - and I'll figure out where I want to stay after I land. I don't want to lug around anything...

Question on renting apartments in Boston, MA

A question for any SF members who know about Boston... A friend of mine is relocating to Boston, MA. One thing he can't figure out is whether washer and dryers inside the apartment are standard. If so, which price-points, type of buildings etc? The idea of having to use one of those communal...

Why Is My Scalp Still Getting Itchy?

Try using a vinegar or apple cider vinegar rinse. Google for directions. Just make sure it does not get in your eyes or you'll be sorry when it stings. Or, apply a paste of baking soda and water, leave it on for a while and then wash/rinse as usual. The vinegar route is easier IMO.

    Is this restaurant policy unusual?

It seems like the chef at Wafu is a bit of a dictator and has turned her restaurant, Wafu, into a members-only club. This CNN report refers to her as the 'sushi Nazi'. http://www.cnngo.com/sydney/eat/wafu-sydney-829661

    Is this restaurant policy unusual?

Here are two articles about a Japanese restaurant in Australia, WAFU http://wafu.com.au/ - along with a detailed explanation on the chef/proprietor's philosophy. I liked the line: "Customers who refused to obey Yukako Ichikawa's rules are directed to her ex-husband's restaurant. " :lol...

How do you beat the heat?

I was thinking of getting one of those cooling vests or 'precool' vests for my daily commute but I reckon by the time I get my order, the worst of the summer heat will be winding down ... http://saltocean.blogspot.com/2011/05/recommended-cooling-vests-for-summer.html...
