Should I shave for black tie events?

I keep a short, just-longer-than-stubble beard year round. I have a black tie event coming up, along with more evening cocktail attire events. I live in SoCal. Should I shave for these events? I genuinely hate the way I look clean-shaven. Photos for context:

Is this Charvet tie a fake?

I bought a Charvet tie on eBay a while ago. It’s clearly a more formal, ‘evening’ tie, but I’m concerned about how thin/delicate it is. According to StyleForum posts of yore, Charvet has a history of making delicate ties, but this one feels almost like it’s made from tinsel. Any thoughts?

Is a satin tuxedo waistcoat acceptable?

I purchased an OTR Spier tuxedo which only came with two pieces; Spier won't make proper black tie waistcoats, so I never asked about them making one. I own a cummerbund, but I don't love wearing one, and would prefer a waistcoat (I'm bigger around the waist, and I could use the coverage to be...

Where To Have A Suit Made In Singapore?

Hey All, My wife is stumped about what to do for my fortieth birthday, and her Hail Mary is to send me to Singapore to have a suit made for me (nice!). She has no idea what this would cost, or how long it would take — she’s heard rumors of places that do insane 48-hour turnarounds. I told her...

Upgrading My Suit, Need Help With Questions/Options!

CONTEXT: I've filled out all the necessary starter items in my wardrobe, and now that I've got my bases covered, I'm starting the process of swapping/upgrading my (small) suit collection, starting with my charcoal "first" suit -- aka, the one you wear to weddings/funerals/interviews/evening...

Is the S&M Neapolitan Cut Suit Too Relaxed For A Three-Piece / Interview / Evening Suit?

I'm cleaning out a closet full of cheap suits, and am looking to streamline my suit collection (mainly so I can expand my sport coat collection, but don't tell my wife!). I live in SoCal, and don't have occasions to wear suits much, except for rare evening events, weddings, and, most often, job...

    OTR "drape cut" jacket options?

(a bit of a novice question, here.) If I'm interested in more drape in my jackets, is that something I can reasonably get from an OTR jacket? It still feels like most OTR options are fixated on ultra-slim silhouettes -- am I just looking in the wrong places? If not OTR, is this something I...

    Feedback on Caruso jacket fit?

Can I get some feedback on the fit of this jacket? This is my first Caruso jacket (I found it on eBay). It's my first jacket of this quality, and things like the finishing/stitching/fabric look/feel great, but I feel like something's "off" about it. I got it tailored a little looser so I can...

N00b Question: How do you cope with people who are uncomfortable with your being "dressed up" all the time?

I feel silly asking this... I live in the Inland Empire, CA (for those of you not familiar, think of somewhere halfway between LA and Las Vegas), so basically *deep* in suburbs/exurbs. I really feel like "me" in more classic clothes, but it feels like other people around me get noticeably...

Instagram Dandies and Classic Style Fans

Whenever I tell people that I'm into classic menswear, I'm always getting FWD'd stuff from what I can best call "Instagram Dandies." Is this a large segment of classic style fans online? It's not what I'm into -- fit is generally bad (in the too-tight 2000s post-Slimane world kind of way), the...

    Pleats for n00bs

I'm a novice, and have some questions about the function/context/appropriateness of certain types of pleats on trousers. Are forward pleats more formal than reverse? What about inverted pleats? How do I know how many pleats to go with, and what type? (If this is covered somewhere in a resource...

  • Love them, classic!

  • Occasionally, depending on the outfit

  • Prefer flat-front

  • Never wear them
