Oscar Jacobson suits, fused or half canvas?

Hello!

I tried on a Oscar Jacobson Edmund suit and I was very suprised by how well it fitted.
It was very soft so it draped very nicly around my shoulders. Seemed to have very little padding.
My current suit is fused and is rather stiff, even tho its S120 (its a rather cheap suit after all tho), so its very uncomfy to move around in.
Now... I found out they have written about their jacket construction on their website, but im kinda confused. I dont understand if its half canvas or fused? Whats the point of using horsehair in a fully canvased suit?

Thank You

Hey!

I'm not familiar with this brand but the page you linked to has your answer on it. It would appear that the suits are half canvassed. This is essentially a hybrid of an inferior fused suit and a fully canvassed one. The horsehair interlining that gives canvassed suits their elegant drape and longevity as compared to fused is used in the more important upper half of the suit while the cost saving but inferior fused construction is used on the bottom half.

As for the purpose of the horsehair, it provides numerous benefits to a suit's construction as an interlining. It is a soft material that can hold a three dimensional shape unlike the fabric of the suit. Horsehair is the most common interlining in suit jackets to my knowledge.

To sum it all up the half canvassed jacket will be a far step above fused quality. It is a cost effective way to get a jacket of better construction so if it fits well and is within your budget then I would say go for it. If you have the means a fully canvassed jacket would be ideal but it depends on your situation.

Best of luck!

This is a super helpful post on jacket construction.
half-canvassed suits will usually have fusible along the length of the fronts of the jacket.
I would not obsess too much about the exact details of the construction at this price point. Half-canvassing is very reasonable. Modern fusibles can be quite good in terms of not feeing stiff and delamination is rare. Fit and style are much more important. If the jacket fits you well and you like the styling, at this price I'd be happy with a half-canvassed jacket.
