I started reading the serious around 2002, soon after Storm of Swords came out. It's been a very frustrating 20 years.


Almost wish he'd have just stopped at book 3 if he was never going to finish the series, at least it wouldn't have tainted that experience.

1997 for me. I have a first edition hardcover of A Game Of Thrones that I bought off the shelf at Borders.

The first three books, which he cranked out with a quickness, were some of the best fantasy I've ever read. The fourth was terrible and the fifth was mediocre. I have absolutely zero expectation that he will ever publish the sixth, much less the seventh. Writing the series became a grind and he has no motivation to do anything not fun ever again. HBO destroyed that possibility by giving him several million dollars worth of "F**k You" money.

I don't remember the exact timing, but I read them in response to the show being made (but in advance of actually watching the show).

I rather enjoyed the experience of seeing what I had relatively recently read being turned into a show...because before it all went to sh!t, it really was a strong adaptation.

And I think any group of people watching it benefitted from having a book reader (rather than the book reader detracting from the experience by bitching about changes the whole time). The readers could remember who everyone was, how they were related, and what they had to do with the general plot.

The first three are revolutionary, really some of the best fantasy ever. Like literally, it transformed the genre. It had gotten pretty hidebound, way too many Tolkein clones or at best "young men coming of age with predictable hero arcs". Fantasy is known for being dependent on tropes and Martin savagely ripped away a lot of them at a time when audiences were NOT used to it.

The TV reaction shows to Ned or Drogo getting killed in the first season were pretty much how book audience reacted. You didn't DO THAT to your main characters, especially in fantasy.

Man I miss Borders…And my best read of Swords.

I think Brandon Sanderson just stole all the writing motivation from Robert Jordan, George RR Martin, and Patrick Rothfuss combined.

Martin and Rothfuss are procrastinating bastards, sure, but Jordan published the 11th WOT book in 2005 and reportedly was working on 12 while he was in chemo and up until he died in 2007. I'm not sure he deserves to be lumped in with the other two.

I will say I enjoyed it quite a bit. Certainly a distinct different feel, but enjoyable nonetheless.
And, re: Sanderson, I LOVE Stormlight, and can only imagine how much I’ll enjoy the next entry, with Szeth as the character of focus. I won’t say I hate it, but I am far less a fanboy of Mistborn. Though, in fairness, I am only about 100 pages in to the second trilogy. The first left me one tu underwhelmed.

I think it was a good thing - Jordan was definitely stalling//lagging in the middle part. Sometimes you need a third party to step in and just tie everything together.

You're doing yourself a disservice foregoing Stormlight, in my opinion. I think it's truly exceptional. Couldn't recommend highly enough
