Hey everyone, I’ve recently added Birkenstock Mayari sandals to my collection and I love how comfy these sandals are. But I’m not sure how to style them, I’m looking for some new ideas on how to style these sandals for casual days out as I don’t want them to be just my house sandals. I’d love to hear from you about how you style your pair of Birks. Do you have a favorite outfit combination you think would look great with them?

A bathing suit and a terry cloth after-swim overshirt, such as those made in Portugal by OAS.

Just because you can wear open-toed sandals everywhere nowadays doesn’t mean you should. Generally speaking, nobody is interested in seeing men’s toes unless they are within stepping distance of the water or the bed.

For casual city wear in summer, get a pair of canvas espadrilles, such as those made in Spain by Castañer. They have rope soles and won’t last long on pavement, but they’re cheap and smart looking. And nobody will have to ponder your toes. Not even you.

Beyond any style concerns are the real, actual, hygienic and podiatric hazards of wearing open-toed footwear in urban environments.

Your bare feet are exposed to a shocking amount of bacteria and viruses like staph and strep, fecal residue from vermin like rats and cockroaches, urine, insect bites, and debris like broken glass. What's worse, is that you are bringing this filth back into your living quarters as few people wash their feet after being out and about in sandals. And, since most sandals don't provide the structure and support for a healthy gait, they're really not good for walking any further than from your lawn chair to the pool. Wearing sandals out and about is really, really not recommended.

That's not to say that Birkenstocks don't have their place, which they do. Think 'resort casual' attire. Floral prints, camp collars, shorts, wide-brimmed Panama hats, in a resort environment sipping a tall cold glass of pilsner. That's where Birks are at home.
