Best man - bow tie or neck tie?

Hi brains trust,

I hope you can help out someone who is not fashion minded at all.

My wedding is coming up, and I have just one groomsman. I am wearing a 3 piece tux, with bow tie. He is wearing a black 2 piece suit, same main material as my tux. My tailor has suggested he also wears a bow tie, just wondering if I should instead have him in a neck tie (same material).

If anyone with a better fashion eye than me could offer some advice, it would be much appreciated.

Definitely a neck tie. Solid color grenadines are a nice choice, but so are "classic wedding ties" (black and white shepards check, prince of wales or houndstooth).

As an FYI, your groomsman will get a lot more future mileage out of a navy or charcoal suit if he hasn't purchased yet. Generally speaking the need for groomsmen to match is overblown and a groomsmen/best man just wearing a nice classic suit (not black) will look much better.

Agreed ^^
Why are you contemplating a ‘faux tux’ for him? Either get him in a proper dinner suit to complement yours (doesn’t have to be exact replica of yours) or else you can be the star of the show in black tie and he can just be in a classy formal suit and long tie, which he can get further use out of on other occasions.
