so why is this thing worth money, but like a TI 83+ is near worthless?

just curious. i figure part of it is they made A LOT of TI graphing calculators for education purposes?

i found a 83+ last year for a dollar. my wife actually still knows how to use it. sits in her desk drawer for the odd caluclation here and there.

@CWOyaji thanks for reminding me, got this a few months back, got lost on my desk.

It's because of it's functionality. It has extreme capabilities. As a civil engineer I use my daily and learned how to survey using it as the computer for a survey total station. The Black part on the back is where the cartridges are inserted and these cartridges have programs for going all kind of things. They even had a printer you could attach to this same location. They are also very durable and most engineers that graduated engineering school from the mid 80's untle around mid 2000's are nostalgic about the HP 48 especial the 48GX.

That is why they are valuable

Interesting article. are we truly in "Thrifting end of days"?

i'll say this much... between people buying A LOT less over the course of the pandemic... and goodwill unfortunately getting hip to sorting out treasure from trash, my hit rate is even more abysmal than usual.

****, my local goodwill outlet went from by the pound, to $1.50 per item... to bulk Gaylord boxes at like $100 each… to all you find now at the bins are ONLY the rejects people threw back from their bulk Gaylord box purchases. literally the dregs of the dregs of the dregs at $1.50 each item.

My local thrift just went to with self check registers and won't accept AMEX anymore. Their electronics and clothes fell way off but maybe that's just the change of seasons because they normally suck during the summer

Had no idea some old classical records were going for such money... usually just pass them by but doing some research lately I'm astounded...😳

The vast majority still has very little value and a narrow market. If you are fortunate enough to find classical records pressed in the UK, particularly in stereo, that also look older than 1970 you may have a one of the rare and valuable ones.

And while the record above will have value in almost any condition, classical prices are very condition sensitive. Much of it was played sparingly and stored on a shelf for years so survived well. So, a $25 classical record if near mint may not have a strong market with some scratches whereas a rock record with mild scratching would probably still be an easy sale.

It can definitely be worth a look, but be careful to make sure the record is one collectors want and, in most cases, the condition is really nice.

I've thrifted for some 30 years, but only for personal use. Would say that for the past few years pickings around here have become slimmer and, of course, prices edging up like everything.
