Never liked that duel scene. It just comes over as super fake, "video gamey", and most of the fights since have had the same problem.
I really like the duel between Rey and Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens, though.
I loved it. The only thing we had between the originals and Menace was video games. I thought the fight was very cool.Same. Never cared for the “Duel of Fates” lightsaber duel. I’ll take any of the lightsaber fights in the prequels over the sequel fights.

TPM was bad, but the Duel of the Fates was pretty solid all things considered. The score definitely carries it, but Ray Park is a genuinely talented martial artist and elevates the whole thing. There are two times in my life I watched a train wreck of a film and had no idea why people were cheering. One was Amagedon the other was Phantom Menace.
TPM had years of hype behind it so I’ll give the audiences that.

There's too many "stand in place and deliberate hit each other's blades" sequences, but for Star Wars? Pretty solid effort. It's way better than anything else in the prequels for sure.

I saw also a huge SW fan as a kid and saw it opening night. I remember leaving on a real high note after the duel, then the next morning I was like...hey wait, that movie sucked. I still like that fight though.I was a teenager when TPM came out...I think in hind sight its easy to criticize but, at the time, it was pretty wild as a kid to see full-blown Jedi and Sith in their prime go at it in a dual as opposed to an untrained kid/old man vs. a stiff cyborg past his hey day
I'm not sure it could get more ridiculous than Yoda v. Christopher Lee. A CGI character the size of a chihuahua against an 80 year old man? Sure, sounds great. Let's do that, George Lucas.
