new to caring for leather shoes -- am I doing it right?

I would be careful with the advice you find online. In the last ten years, there has been a boom of guys who are obsessive about footwear and, in my opinion, do too much to their shoes. There's a whole shoe culture online now with blogs and YouTube channels dedicated to just this singular item, and then guys on this forum who do nothing but post photos of their shoes and buy more shoes.

If you only care about shoes, then there are a lot of resources online. But if you want to dress well, this singular focus can be at the detriment to everything else. Think about your shoes as just one small part of your outfit. Shoes don't need to be polished all the time to look good. Natural wear and tear on shoes can also make an outfit look good in a way that doesn't come across when people just post photos of their shoes as standalone objects.
