My girlfriend is in the market for a new piece of luggage (rolling carry-on) and is looking for something other than the ubiquitous black. She's into this one she found online: http://www.orlakiely.com/shopping/?s...productID=2073, but it's still a little out of her price range.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions as far as manufacturers, styles, and/or retailers that we can look into.

Ideally, she'd like to spend less than $200.

Thanks,

Dan

Dan,

I use Tumi's T3 luggage, which is considerably most stylish than their ubiquitous black stuff but still very high quality. Retail, it is a little high, but there are a few other options. From time to time, TJ MAXX or MARSHALL's will have Tumi luggage at prices about $150-200. Also, if you check some outlet stores, they might have slightly better prices. Mine is about a 22inch rolling carry-on bag with a suiter and the retail was about $400 or so (so, at discount, you could probably get it within her budget).

So, if you live near one of those stores, it might be worth the effort. Overall, though, I would say stick to a luggage manufacturer and don't go designer (not that you are considering this... but just learn from my mistake). Even though most designer luggage will be beyond the price range mentioned, it often will fall apart as fast as a cheap piece. I used to have some Prada, Borbonese, etc etc. luggage that cost a fortune and that I expected to hold up well. Short story is that it didn't. My Tumi, however, is doing well after getting beat up in the trans-Pacific flights.

I agree that Tumi is great luggage. I have the T-tech pulse line. The 30 inch rolling duffel which has been great, as well as the smaller carry on and garment bag. These bags have been with me to some pretty bad destinations and taken a beating but have held up extremely well and my clothes have never been damaged.
