Agree with this, plus I just think they look better independently of versatility.I think darker brown goes with more things, and that was your main criteria. Dark brown goes better with dark and mid-blue denim which are some of the most popular casual trousers. As well as mid and dark grey smarter trousers which are probably the most common colours for smarter trousers.
Lighter brown is good with ecru jeans and beige chinos which are popular too but probably not as popular.
Ideally if you're going to be building a really versatile wardrobe you'll probably want a pair of dark brown as well as a lighter brown (tan) smart-casual shoes at some point but if you're choosing between one or the other now, go for the ones that go with what you will wear most out of dark-coloured casual trousers or light coloured casual trousers.
Maybe also worth bearing in mind that often dark brown shoes look acceptable with light coloured trousers, but light brown shoes usually clash with dark coloured trousers, in my opinion, so dark is generally more versatile overall!
