My husband and I just took my youngest brother-in-law who is 24 shopping for his first suit last month. He also didn't know really what he wanted.
What was most helpful for him wasn't going to places like Indochino or Suitsupply, where the options confused him endlessly and there were very limited suits he could try on in store, but rather going to high end department stores, local boutiques, and haberdasheries and just spend a few hours trying on different suits. He really found it helpful to see, feel, and put on a finished product (subject to some tailoring) rather than be shown a bunch of pictures and fabric samples asked what he liked or was looking for.
It helped that we were with him. Sometimes the sales people, especially at department stores will lead you astray.
It turned out that he wore Hugo Boss off-the-rack like a Hugo Boss model. Hugo Boss isn't the best quality suit you could get as far as the range of quality goes, it's also not worst. And the fit was so perfect, it was a great suit for him to start off with.
