Hi all,

I'm trying to identify the differences between casual and formal collared shirts. Take, for instance, the two below:

Aside from obvious differences such as pockets, and the manner of wear (buttoned up, tucked in, with a bow tie etc.), what distinguishes the two? Both are 100% cotton, yet what gives the formal shirt its crisp appearance and sheen, and the casual shirt its softer hand and matte appearance?

cloth is one factor: in general rougher, heavier cloths (oxford, chambray, brushed twill, linen) are more casual, smoother, tighter weave cloths (pinpoint, broadcloth, sea island, etc) are more formal.

construction is another factor: stiffer interlining in collar and cuffs gives more formal appearance.

design details: plackets, pockets, pleats, buttons, stitching (or lack of those things). usually more minimal is more formal.

some designers make hybrids using more experimental cuts or mix casual and formal elements together.

Visible Pick Stitching on Lapels and Pockets

  • It’s a mark of quality and craftsmanship

  • I like it when it’s subtle

  • I don’t like visible stitching

  • Doesn’t matter to me
