This echoes my experience with the unlined suede Chukka’s. Supremely comfortable, sock-like feel. But the flex soles feel too flimsy for urban use. You can feel everything under it. Nothing a resole for something more robust couldn’t fix I guess? I wonder if someone tried this.- tuna roll

not an expert but I’ve seen cobblers glue a small piece of leather over the tear, sand flush, then glue a topy on top. Short term solution though. I have the same chukka’s and find the original soles quite flimsy for city wear. Will probably resole mine soon with double leather soles.- tuna roll

The soles on the 987 should break in and become more flexible with use, thus reducing heel slip. Also, since it happens mainly on one foot, you could add tongue or heel pads if necessary. Or even have a cobbler stitch an additional layer of leather on the heel, for a more elegant solution...- tuna roll

Interesting, apparently we have similar feet but take opposite approaches to loafer sizing. I’m a 9D (between D and E) Brannock as well and 8D or 8E in the Van last gives me zero heel slippage and an almost perfect fit, except the toes in my left foot feel a bit cramped. Personally I...- tuna roll

@wolfdale BTW did you try the 986? I believe my feet are similar to yours and I found the 8E to be perfect width wise (maybe a bit too wide), but too short (cramped toes on my left foot which is longer). Need to try 8.5D.- tuna roll

With the 8D, where exactly do you feel cramped? Suede does stretch a bit width wise, but not lengthwise. If you toes are cramped, or hitting the end of the shoe when you flex your feet, breaking in won't help much. I'd go with the 8.5D. If they are just snug width wise or at the vamp, that...- tuna roll
