Damn you all . . . And thank you, I guess. I had no need for a bag before I saw this thread, and now I'm the proud owner of a tan 256 (Crane's was great by the way-- call for a good deal).

The bag is actually bigger than I was expecting and is the perfect size for a laptop and a bunch of other stuff. Used it these past two weekends for a quick getaway overnight bag too.

Howdy, all...two questions with which I'm hoping you'll be able to help--

1) I checked out the Filson 256 this past weekend, and the thing that put me off buying it was the length of the handles. It felt to me like, since I'd be using the shoulder strap most of the time, they'd be flopping around. For those of you with this bag, how annoying are these handles when using the shoulder strap? Or...is there some elegant method to easily tuck them out of the way?

2) Those of you that got the 256 from Crane's and had the handgrip installed...how was the quality of it? Did the leather match and was the construction up to par? Not to potentially besmirch the good people over at Crane's; everything I've heard/read about them points to their superb quality--both of the product and the store itself.

Thanks in advance!

I don't find the handles a problem at all. They aren't intrusive, and don't do much "flopping". They are definitely there though. If you don't like the way it looks, perhaps this isn't the bag for you.

When you don't want to use the shoulder strap, they're perfect. The shoulder strap can be folded and neatly tucked into on of the side pockets of the bag. Looks great this way. I think someone posted a photo this way earlier in the thread.

As for the handgrip, I can't say. Again, the handles are great, and soften up nicely with use. Kudos to Cranes though. Definitely give them a call. I've made 3 purchases from them in the last 4 months, and had nothing but good experiences.

Sorry for the ****** cell phone pics

How did I miss this?! Someone using a Filson product for something other than a MBP! Well done. Can I ask what's inside? How long is that case? I have a boat oar of a remington from the 50's that needs some rooooooom.

Thanks in advance!

My tan Filson 256 bag came in the mail today; bought from Crane's.

First impressions:
- Much bigger than I had thought and glad I went with the 256 over the 257
- great construction and the leather feels very stiff/hard, hopefully this will soften over time
- I got the optional leather handle grip for the extra cost. It seems fine, I will update my thoughts after using it for a bit longer
- very happy with this purchase, I will be using this bag for a very long time

Does anyone have a picture of a well worn filson bag in brown?

I would like to see how the color ages.

Quick question,
Just got my filson small duffle bag in brown, love it so far, but do you guys think I should spray it with water resistant spray or whatever it's called?

I like the floppy handles on the 256. Eventually they soften and flop down by the sides of the bag. I think the handgrip takes away some of the aesthetic, and also doesn't allow the handles to hang down when carrying by the shoulder strap, ensuring they remain "in the way," so to speak.

Another colorway is on sale for $170. This is still $240.

NO! You use the wax reproofing stuff on the bag. It's waxed 22 ounce twill.

anyone know how much would it cost to replace the shoulder strap? I bought it from a SFer in B&S and the back of the strap seems to be heavily scratched and was never mentioned in his description....

well here are some pics, give me some ideas/advices please.

Anyone know where would be the best place to buy Filson 256 in say, brown in the UK? Most popular online retailer charge at least almost 2x the US price :S. May be importing it myself would be cheaper after all?

Best,
T
