best shirts to wear with cashmere sweaters with jeans

I would like to know what is good to wear under a high end cashmere sweater? I will be picking up 7 high end cashmere sweaters soon and would like to know what type of shirts SF members think look good with dark jeans with a classic style cashmere sweater. The sweaters will be v or crew neck sweaters, almost certainly single color, with some having the twisted cable pattern and maybe others vertical bar pattern and plain. This will be my standard dress during the winter that I wear on a daily basis.

What I value:
1. I want shirts that will not go out of style in 5 years. Timeless look is very important to me
2. I am very very big on quality, I want shirts that will last and are of the HIGHEST quality.
3. Company's that stand behind there products.
4. Money is not a problem, however I do not want to pay just to pay a higher price.
5. I do not work under anyone nor will I so there is no dress code that I have to abide by other than an occasional higher end restaurant in which case I may choose to wear nicer pants and thus may need a different style shirt under my sweater as well as a blazer on top if they require this.

My questions:
What type/style of shirts?
What colors/patterns (do i match it with anything)?
What brands have best reputation of these shirt styles?
What type/material/brand of jacket to go over the sweater and shirt if I need to wear one?

If it matters, I am around 190-200lb, 34" waist, 6'4'' and age 25 and arms that are roughly 1.5-2 inches longer than normal 6'4'' people have so sleeve length is very important.

Thanks everyone, you guys were extremely amazing in my other thread the other day so I though I would try this again.

What color sweaters are you buying? What designs? V-neck or crew neck? More info!

Get a bunch of oxfords. White, blue, french blue, striped, red, whatever. Land's End or LL Bean make great ones that hold their own against brands that cost three times as much. And pretty much anything either puts out is never going to go out of style. They pretty much exclusively deal in tasteful, classic pieces.

Or, you know, whatever else. Plaid sport shirts, the occasional flannel....

Basically, you're asking what to pair with two types of incredibly versatile basics. The answer is pretty much anything.

I also think that if you are going for V or crew neck, go with oxfords... I personally don't like polo's under cashmere crew or v necks. But THE best brand--well there isn't any best brand since they either have something good about them, or some sort. But among the best companies that stand by their products is actually lands end. They are cheap, but they have a policy (if it is still in place) that you can return anything for any reason at any time I believe.

If you don't have a budget and like a more fitted look, look at a few BoO shirts, Iron Heart Oxfords, etc... Just gotta look around. Just don't go for the overly mass-produced labels (ie. Gucci, DG), since they will usually have a lesser reuptation and they just aren't worth the money.

For color combo's, I don't think we should be recommending this cause everyone looks better in a different color compared to other people, I look better in a bright yellow, gray, navy, or more light colors compared to really dark colors like dark green, black, deep purple. Just mix and match it yourself. It is the only way you will know, and everyone's opinion is different. As long as you like it thats all that matters.

Like others have said, you should just go with a oxford cloth button down. What maker depends on your budget. If you can say something about that, maybe people can make some suggestions.

In general, however, you can do almost anything - a poplin shirt or twill. You can even do a broadcloth, though I think those are harder to wear when you're layering with a sweater. I've also seen chambrays work well, but that very much depends on how your sweater looks, both in how fine the cashmere is as well as its color.

In terms of the pattern of the shirt, stripes or solids would work fine if you're just wearing a solid colored sweater.

Again, you should say something about your budget.

Whatever brand you choose, get a button-down collar. Nothing looks cheaper than a big floppy collar splayed out over the sweater like it's trying to escape from your neck.

I am willing to spend 350 per shirt (including adjustments) and am willing to wait around until sales too so the 350 should be able to go further than $350. Also since I would like 7 of the same style shirt I would think that may also increase the value of my dollar. Also, I should mention that I am not dead set on spending 350 per shirt, I just think that is about the most that I would be willing to spend per shirt. I DO NOT like the GUCCI, Prada, Versace, DG type brands in general and prefer to buy the best maker of each type thing i deal with whether it is clothes or appliances. Although, if those popular places are known for the best oxfords or whatever type shirt than by all means I am open to them.

Also one suggestion that I have thought about is getting custom made shirts because of how freaking long my arms are however I have no experience with this.

Not sure, I imagine I will get a navy, black, dark brown, maroon, dark green, dark grey, and maybe a few other colors. I will likely get both crew and some v neck. Are v necks considered more formal?

Would flannels look ok with a sweater because they both have that similar texture?
OK that is what I thought but i figured I should ask because I never really know what looks good.

This is quite helpful, thank you all and keep up the suggestions.

so the collar needs to be fastened down even without a tie? Is this nearly universally accepted here at SF as the best way to go? I do not think i have ever buttoned down a collar in my life without a tie lol, I will start now i guess.

Oh I forgot to mention that I can get employee discounts through my friend at a bunch of stores but i dont really care to use them unless the stores make excellent shirts. These include RL polo outlets, Lacoste, Tods, Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Nordstrom, Hermes, and a few other brand name stores. I am not sure what each of these places get but I think she mentioned that Lacoste was 70% off, Tods was between 40-70% off, RL 30% off, Gucci around 50%, Nordstrom 30% off,... I can't say that i have ever looked at shirts in any of these places other than polo so i don't even know if these places sell shirts or for that matter if they are of high quality but i thought i would mention this in the event that it mattered. Thanks again everyone.

Personally I think Oxford shirts are usually too thick and warm to use under a cashmere sweater. It's a pity because one of the best looking things I know is a cashmere cable sweater with a button down Oxford under... instead I use short sleeve polos from Polo, Purple Label and Lacoste. It's nice because then I feel the soft cashmere caressing my arms.

I've just recently started to use shirts more and more (being 27 and rather new in the post-student world). My favorites are the Oxfords from Polo Ralph Lauren for a casual look, and fine Borrelli shirts for a dressier look. Bought my first Borrelli from eHaberdasher (Style Forum affiliate) a couple of months ago, and it's really gorgeous. I will certainly buy more. They are unbelievably nice at that discount price, usually $140-$150.

Be careful with the collar though, I agree with this:

It doesn't need to be, it's a matter of taste. There's certainly nothing that limits button-down collars to being worn with ties though.

I recommend a button shirt. You may also look into getting a job.

OK, maybe its me but, he's talking about dropping $350.00 per shirt. Maybe not Charvet, but you can get some very nice MTM for $350.00 per shirt. And, since his arms are "1.5-2 inches longer" than most folks his size, MTM sounds like the best option, maybe the only option for a shirt that fits properly. I'd suggest he try some of the fine shirtmakers that advertise above. Yeah, some OCBD's would be nice but there's a lot of other options out there.

How do you prefer trousers to be finished?

  • Plain hem

  • Cuffed (1.5 inches or less)

  • Cuffed (more than 1.5 inches)

  • No preference, as long as the proportions work
