Help me fix this old MTM suit

I purchased the suit in 2005, it's a MTM Hart Schaffner Marx from Nordstroms. I picked the swatches, had the measurements taken and picked it up a few months later. I have recently been dreading ever wearing it to interviews because it is so boxy and long, plus a 3 button just doesn't seem to appeal to my sense of style anymore.

I wanted to get some recommendations on what sort of alterations I should get done to it since it has no use to me currently. Any advice would be helpful.

Taper the legs of the trousers and shorten it a bit.

Maybe see if you can have the lapels pressed to a 3 roll 2, that might help keep it from bowing out from the side.

I don't think it looks too bad. I'd have the sides of the jacket taken in a bit and shorten the pants. Other than that it's fine.

Some waist suppression would do a great deal to improve the shape, other than that just have the trousers slimmed & trimmed.

All in all its not where near the most terrible suit that has been posted.

Would you recomend leaving the cuff and having a break on the trousers or should I have it changed to no break without a cuff? I know it's a personal preference but it seems like it would be more sleek that way.

I prefer a cuff....Those pants look too long IMO.

Being less of an iGent than the honourable posters above, I prefer to avoid a cuff on a gent such as yourself.

Without being impolite you have slightly short legs, made to appear shorter by the long coat. If you keep the cuff you essentially put book-ends on your legs, highlighting their (lack of?) length. It may be in your interest to allow the trousers to "trail off" as they would un-cuffed leading the eye to believe they are longer.

Obviously its a personal choice, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

I agree with your assessment. Now would it be advisable to have these alterations done at Nordstroms where I bought it or should I seek out an independent tailor? I have a few in mind that are local that have some great reviews and recommendations I've seen on other forums.

It's fine. Only some slight alterations are needed. You can wear it to interview without alteration at all.

It doesn't look that bad. You can safely shorter the jacket length by an inch or two without it looking off balance, and I don't think you need any more than that. I think the 3-button style looks quite good on you. The trousers look much too long, but make sure you're wearing them at the proper height. And remove the cuffs because it will give your legs a little extra length.

Jacket looks pretty good, but the pants need shortened a bit and I would have the legs pegged in slightly.
