Yes, I think it was the most expensive private house built by a non-royal person -- and he spent so much money on it (and the objects he filled it with) that he went bankrupt.

Of course, we must not forget the little residence Louis XIV had built for himself:

That's a nice crib but the maintenance costs must be a killer. Then again, I imagine it's not much different from renting an entire hotel for yourself.
