I'm going to a sorority formal that will take place in the evening, like past 8. I'm wondering how formal should I dress for this event?

-khakis, brown shoes, Navy coat, white shirt, and tie

Or

-black pants and coat with a white shirt and tie

Having never been invited to a sorority formal (or even a sorority informal, which come to think of it sounds even better) I confess to having no clue what dress is expected. Your first choice is not very formal, more like preppy club attire, and maybe that's fine. Again, no clue. Your second choice is confusing; by "black pants and coat" do you mean a tux? If so, I trust the tie is a bow and the shoes are spit-shined black if not patent leather. If you own a tux and the event is labeled "formal," you have your answer. You could always ask the hostess--unless you are crashing the party, in which case a tux is essential, along with a cracking cold bottle of Perrier-Jouet.

Khaki and Navy Blazer is too casual. Typically, nice dress pants and SC are worn. White dress shirt and tie.
