These are extremely well made. Probably the one shoemaker who still leaves his shoes on the last for over a month and so the boot is really stable.

They aren't cordovans, but they are really good looking as a shoe as well as a boot and are difficult to beat for comfort.

Those are very nice boots in person, very elegant for the genre. I like Ron's boots, very well made.
The pics come from the leffot store blog, where that particular boot is an exclusive iirc.

this ravello is available in size 11, which might be your size in Barrie last?

and I think its much, much nicer than the Rider boot you posted. you will always be able to buy a black shell plain toe boot.

The Rider boot will have much better construction than any Alden boot, though, plus the OP probably won't have to worry about possible QC issues if he steers clear of Alden like he intended to in the first place.

I doubt either of us are really in a position to know that, and either way, I think the word "much" is a bit...much. it's not like we are talking about Johnston Murphy vs EG

I guess he assumes risk of a boot showing up that has some flaw on it. he could return that. meh?

either way, forget alden, the C&J for BB is much nicer. also there are other nicer Rider Boot options, he does plenty in interesting shell colors. the walnut ones look amazing.

I have owned roughly a dozen pairs of Aldens, and while I haven't owned Riders, I have handled them before. On every pair of Riders that I have looked at, the stitching on the upper was noticeably neater than on my Aldens.

my question was more to the point of ultimate quality - will one boot really outlive the other by any appreciable margin, assuming equal wear & care? my gut tells me "no" but again I doubt either of us know with any certainty. everything else is a question of style preference

i've owned some aldens for a sec but just dont get any of their lasts, they dont work for me, mostly in the toe box area. I also owned some rider boot co wingtip boots earlier this year and the quality is insane, unfortunately i got them from francos and they had a dent (literally) and many creases so i returned. I have disliked Alden for some time now and think they are over-rated. Also i dont get why their boots are so short, they are about an inch shorter at the eyelet/fast hook area than any of my other boots. Also the 2 pairs i had all had some small QC issue.

Probably not, but by the same token, would an Edward Green shoe outlive an Allen-Edmonds shoe by an appreciable margin? Hard to say, but either way, I'd still say that EG has better construction quality than AE.

eh, I think most agree that EG uses better quality leathers than AE, but this convo is shell:shell, so that isn't a factor.

and I am the proud owner of a couple pairs of AE, so I agree I wouldn't buy EG
