The waist band will never look the same again. It will pucker from washing. So, my recommendation is to dry clean these trousers.

My experience, Irish linen shrinks a very minimal amount when washed and if they do shrink it’s in the length. So I get my trousers made and get the hem finished once they have been washed. As it has been stated I get my trousers made with a simple grown on waistband in the summer, or what’s been called a sports waistband here. Waistbands with a lining are rubbish in the heat. I would recommend Irish linen generally, it’s far more robust and durable than the European stuff and will hold up to years of abuse. If you look far enough back they used linen for workwear and military garments.
