National Park visits

Has anybody here traveled among the more notorious national parks and come away with thoughts about the merits of visiting them? I've got a week off in May and I'm thinking about going to one or two to get some much needed outdoor time. I guess I'm not even sure what all there is to do to occupy time. I'm not much of a camper or hiker, but open to anything. The less physically intensive the better. Fishing? Bird watching? Geysers? What goes on at these places and when is the time to visit them?

I'll cast a vote for the Badlands. Nothing active like geysers, but the lack of tourists made it the most serene environment I've ever been in. Just driving through the roads was breathtaking, much less getting out to walk around, pause, watch the sun set.

I the badlands are pretty awesome.

Also, a vote for the Moab.

Or maybe something in AZ between Tucson and Phoenix.

I didn't do this of course...

Hitch hike into Mesa Verde then sneak into the back trails off limits to the general population. Great way to get lost in an ancient world.

Badlands are nice but not someplace I could spend a week hiking thru.

Hiking into the Grand Canyon from the north entrance is pretty cool.

Seriously you need to hike and escape the crowds in order to really get an appreciation for these places.

For general tourist stuff Yellow Stone is alot of fun

OH I forgot hiking down to the Havasu falls and getting drunk with the indians for a week during the peach festival. That was an experience.

Then, Yosemite, try for a cancelation at the Ahwahnee Lodge. http://www.yosemitepark.com/Accommod...eAhwahnee.aspx

Both of these places you will remember for the rest of your life.

+1 on Yosemite. one of my favorite places in the world. yes, it's overcrowded in the summer time and people are killing it. but May (before Mem Day) is quite possibly the perfect time to visit. the Sierras got a pretty decent snowpack this past winter and by May, the waterfalls will be absolutely stunning like you wouldn't even believe. and the summer hordes won't have descended yet.

Nat'l Parks are cool, and May will is a good time for fewer people. Acadia! Grand Teton! Yellowstone! Yosemite! Grand Canyon! Glacier! All awesome, all memorable.. Where are you and what are you looking for?

I would hit Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Mesa Verde and maybe Canyonlands and then go hang out in Telluride for a few days.

Telluride is the ****...although I would much prefer to be there 3 weeks ago when the ski area was still open

I have developed an interest in visiting the national parks as a short and sweet way to recharge the batteries. The last national park I visited was Canyonlands/Arches in 2002. From my research, the must-sees are Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Bryce/Zion, and Yosemite. Anyone been to these? Any other suggestions?

Three out of four.
