I'm not in an overly conservative mood today.

Thought I might juxtapose these two fits by way of illustrating a menswear "rule" which occasionally causes some confusion: avoiding "matchy-matchy" tie/PS combos.

MV's combo simply breaks the rule.

UC's effort is kinda matchy-matchy too. So why did it garner more than fifty thumbs?

A whole lot of reasons why. First and foremost, because the patterns of tie and square are markedly different. One is a large neat, the other appears to be a kind of paisley with a solid border.

Second, because each item has at least one colour not found in the other.

Thirdly, because the shared colours are tertiary (i.e. they contain a mixture of all three primary colours), and therefore not so harsh on the eye.

Fourthly, because the small-scale pattern of the suit jacket creates its own visual interest, balancing the activity of tie and square.

And of course, UC's outfit as a whole shows great attention to detail. Perfect fit; great shirt collar; classic Neapolitan cut of the jacket shoulders and lapels.

Anyway MrVenneri, welcome to SF. Your gracious response to a trenchant critique of your first fit was exemplary. Look forward to seeing your future efforts.
