Help, leather conditioner stained my new lamb skin jacket

I just got myself a brand new lamb skin riders jacket I'd set my eyes on for a while. One of the first things I wanted to do was condition the jacket with Creme Delicat from Saphir, so I put a small amount of the cream on a clean cloth and gently rubbed it onto an inconspicuous part on the inside of the jacket. The color darkened a little as is usual, but after more than 10 minutes, it was still there.

Shocked, I closed the Creme Delicat jar and got out my Creme Universelle instead hoping for a different outcome. Sadly, here too the lotion seemed to have darkened the leather and it doesn't go away.

I'm really shocked here. I've used these products numerous times and this darker color always disappeared after a few moments on my other leather jacket and my dress shoes, but now it's not. What has happened here?? Are those two products not compatible with this type of leather?

Darkening can be seen to the left

How long has it been? I’ve used similar products on my tan deerskin jacket and it goes super dark at first, then can take a few days for the material to really absorb and dry out. Then it looks like new.

It's been about 12 hours now. The stains are still there. You make a good point though, so I'll give it some more time. I've applied mink oil to a leather jacket before which took a good 24 hrs to set in, but I didn't expect lotions to need that much time since my other leather items haven't reacted this way.

I contacted the manufacturer of the jacket. They responded that the leather has already been treated with oil at the time of manufacturing, so adding excess oil by using oil based products like Saphir is likely to cause discoloration and premature deterioration of the leather.

I then went to Tokyu Hands and was advised to never ever use oil based products as strong as Saphir on soft, light colored leather like lambskin. The best I could do is use a waterproof spray that contains nourishing compounds for when the leather begins to dry out, and a regular water proof spray for now since it's still new and doesn't need nourishment yet. When asked if Renomat would help dissolve the discoloration, they said it would be too strong and risks causing even more irreversible stains.

So yeah, I guess the good thing I can take away from this is that I was cautious enough to test it out on small inconspicuous areas first

  • It’s a mark of quality and craftsmanship

  • I like it when it’s subtle

  • I don’t like visible stitching

  • Doesn’t matter to me
