In my other post i finished those exotics by hand sanding from 100 grit to 1000 grit in about 5 stages, 0000 grade steel wool, then a tack cloth, linseed oil and finished with a bowling alley wax. Nice thing about the wax is that you can touch it up easily.

This finish is fine for me since i wear leather soled shoes and dont try to do wind sprints in my house, but it might be trouble for kids.

You could always seal the unfinished floors with natural tung oil.

i'd go hardware floors with rugs.

i was loft shopping the other day and this one unit had hardwood floors on the 1st floor and Sisal flooring up in the bedroom loft. it was freakin' cool and it seems like it would kind of be the best of both worlds. but i have no idea about durability, how it cleans, pricing compared to hardwood/carpeting, etc.

Sisal gives a very "clean" look, however it is very rough on the feet. Personally, I would go with a New Zealand wool fiber woven in a sisal look. You will get the look of a sisal with the durability, and stain resistance of wool.

Agree. If the budget allows, I would put in Radiant heating and hardwood. Throw on a rug for the kids to play on. I hate dust allergies so I find that I cant have carpet in the house and I also like the clean look of wood.

Just be sure that the manufacturer allows for radiant heat. Due to the expansion and contraction of certain species you can wind up with cracking, checking, and unsightly gaps! Just a heads up!
