Yesterday I bought 45 books for 3 classes. I was also told that if I start to feel like I'm losing my mind, don't worry, it's normal. What did I get myself into...

Shouldn't your advisor's money or the department be buying that for you? I never paid a cent for my Ph.D. and had health insurance and a modest stipend that covered basic living and a decent night on the town once a week or so with my friends.

I rarely went to class in grad school. Mostly did lip service with the professors and showed up for tests. If you're nice, they'll understand that they have research to do and you have research to do. Neither of you want to be there.

What's your major btw?

Yes, it's not the cost that is concerning, it's the massive amounts of reading that are about to hit me.

Are you doing a PhD?

Honestly, if the massive amounts of reading concern you, you are probably in the wrong place.

Every grad student I've ever known has been a little intimidated in the beginning. We are humans, not dichotomies.

Oh gosh.

You'll have all the time in the world to be intimidated before your comps or whatever. First couple of years are busy but easy, enjoy it.
