Brand / Model / Vintage: Omega Constellation Reference 168.005 circa 1964

Movement: Clean, corrosion-free Omega in-house caliber 561 automatic movement, 24 jewels, date chronometer. The 55x/56x/75x family of Omega calibers are widely considered to be the finest mass-produced movements in the history of watchmaking. Movement serial number 21,2xx,xxx.

Case: Original stainless steel case shows signs of wear commensurate with age. Edges remain sharp. The iconic "dog leg" or "grasshopper lug" steel case comes in at a classic 34mm width (excluding crown) by 42mm long. Distance between lugs is 18mm. The distinctive Observatory logo on the back is well defined. Scratches appear on the exterior case back; several watchmaker’s marks are present on the interior.

Dial / Crystal / Handset / Crown: Original dial with lacquer finish is lustrous and free of any flaking and pimpling. Some minor discoloration can be seen along the periphery at the four hour marker. Applied Omega symbol and star and framed date window are original as are the raised rhodium plated hour markers. The crystal is original (Omega logo at center) and shows small cracks and some chipping around the periphery. The winding crown is not original. The non-lumed Dauphine hands are period correct and look to have been in place for the life of the watch, yet it’s unknown if they originated with the timepiece.

Bracelet: Original Omega five-row Beads of Rice bracelet, code 1502 "14" end pieces. Bracelet can accommodate a 7”+ wrist and comes with two additional links.

Condition: Although the watch winds and keeps good time I highly recommend having this collectible timepiece serviced at the time of purchase. I believe this watch has been unused and stored away for decades. The case back was impossible for me to remove as the seal had essentially “fused” to the case. A special jig and wrench pins had to be configured at ABC Watchwerks in order to safely open the case, thus providing access the movement. Currently the case back is only hand-tightened.

Notes: It’s rare to see early 60's Omega Constellations with full provenance: Omega certificate, guarantee card and original owner documentation with original presentation box. Factor in that the 168.005 was designed by the great Gerald Genta and it’s easy to see why the collector base for this particular “Connie” continues to grow.
